Normally, gaining muscle at decent rate means that you'll gain some fat too. People trying to gain muscle without gaining any fat at all invariably end up disappointed with their slow rate of growth.

However, what you can try is a modified version of The Bracketing Method, where you eat at maintenance calories on the days you don't lift weights.

On the days you train with weights, follow the same diet but bracket your workout with extra carbohydrate and protein, following the guidelines for pre-, intra- and post-workout nutrition described in A Simple But Powerful Way To Trigger Faster Muscle Growth. What this means is that your calorie intake is increased only on weight-training days, which is going to help fuel muscle growth while minimizing fat gain.

Judging from his pictures, Cam isn't too far away from 8%. So either your body fat level is higher than you think it is, or you need to build some more muscle. Have you got any pictures of yourself you could link to? Seeing how you look will give me a better idea as to what you should do next.

Although Cam Gigandet is definitely on the lean side, he's got some muscle too. You run the risk of looking too skinny if you try to strip away the fat without having built enough muscle. Any idea what your body fat percentage is right now?

Although you can lose fat and gain muscle at the same time, unless you're an overweight beginner, returning to exercise after a layoff, very genetically gifted (or using drugs), you're not going to be able to do both at anything approaching the same rate.

In other words, it's far more realistic to lose 10 pounds of fat while gaining a pound or two of muscle, or to gain five pounds of muscle while adding a couple of pounds of fat. Losing 10 pounds of fat at the same time as replacing it with 10 pounds of muscle is the exception and not the rule.

Hello. I'm 5' 11.5 inches and weigh approximately 225 lbs. I lift weights for around an hour for a football program at my school- 75% of my max for 2 sets of 10. My bench max is around 265, so i'm not sure if i could be called novice, intermediate, etc. as far as workout experience.

I want to gain muscle mass - that's my primary focus- but lose fat simultaneously. I'd like to be slim, but a six-pack isn't of the utmost importance, though it'd be nice. How many calories should i eat and how much cardio should i do to still maintain a substantial muscle gain and lose some fat (basically, maintain my same body weight by swapping fat for muscle).

The first step to dropping the fat is to cut back on your calorie intake. I explain how to do this in Are You Losing Muscle As Well As Fat?

I don't have a copy of the P90X routine, but any program that combines intense cardio with resistance training is going to help you drop fat while preserving lean muscle. Let me know how it goes.

Hello, I am currently doing the p90x workout. Now I have always been in great shape and I decided I wanted to put on some muscle. So I lifted heavy and ate a lot. I have put on all the muscle I wanted and I am not close to fat but I can barley see the bottom abs of my six pack. I am having a problem getting the last bit of results i am looking for. I just need some advice how much to eat? What to eat? And will sticking with the p90x routine get me to where I want? Thank you so much for any responce.
