Have you heard of an herb called Tongkat Ali?
Q. Have you heard of an herb called Tongkat Ali? I'm dieting
at the moment and my weight loss has started to plateau. Would
this supplement increase my metabolic rate? Also, when I want to
add muscle, will this stuff help?
A. Eurycoma longifolia Jack, otherwise known as Eurycoma, Tongkat
Ali, Longjack, or Malaysian Ginseng, is an herb that's supposed
to have aphrodisiac properties and to increase testosterone levels
in men.
There are claims that Eurycoma extract may help prevent age-associated
androgen deficiency, enhance sexual function, and improve psychological
parameters such as mood, energy, and sense of well-being.
Initial studies in rats and mice show that it increases the sexual
activity of males. In one study, a group of inbred adult middle-aged
Sprague-Dawley rats treated with Eurycoma increased their "orientation
activities" towards the receptive females (anogenital sniffing,
licking and mounting), as well as increasing "genital grooming" towards
themselves compared with rats not given the herb [1].
This is all very interesting... if you have a pet rat with libido "issues." While
there are a couple of human trials that put Eurycoma to the test,
I have doubts about the veracity of the data in both cases.
I'll explain why in a moment. Firstly, let's take a closer look
at what happened in both studies...
