Does pre-exercise protein lower testosterone levels?
Q. I read about a study that says taking protein before exercise
reduces your testosterone levels. I've stopped taking whey protein
before exercise because I'm worried it will have a negative effect
on muscle growth. What do you think?
A. The study that
I think you're referring to was done by a research group from the
University of Jyvaskyla in Finland [1]. I haven't read the full
paper, so I can't make any comments about the way the research
was done, but I'll do my best to put the findings in context for
you.
For the study, a group of 10 resistance-trained young men received
25 grams of protein (a mixture of whey and casein) in liquid form
30 minutes before a heavy bout of resistance exercise lasting 50
minutes. Seven days later they did the same thing, only this time
the drink was a placebo that contained no calories.
What they researchers found is that consuming protein 30 minutes
before exercise led to a drop in testosterone levels.
