Is vitamin C a new weapon in the fight against fat?
Q. I read in the news about a study that says vitamin C can help
you burn fat faster. I'm trying to lose weight so I've started
taking 2 grams of vitamin C per day. How long does it take to start
working?
A. Personally, I don't think taking 2 grams of vitamin C every
day is a great idea. I'll explain why in a moment. First, I just
want to review what happened in the study.
The news story you refer to is based on a study by US researchers
presented at a conference
in San Francisco. Bonnie Beezhold and Professor Carol Johnston
from Arizona State University looked at the effect of vitamin C
supplementation in 20 obese men and women who also followed a low-fat
diet.
The subjects were assigned to one of two groups. One group's diet
was supplemented with 500 milligrams of vitamin C, while the other
group received an identical-looking placebo.
At the beginning of the trial, volunteers with the lowest blood
concentrations of vitamin C were found to have the highest level
of body fat.
After four weeks, the supplemented group had increased blood concentrations
of vitamin C by 30%, while the control group's levels decreased
by 27%.
As vitamin C blood concentrations fell, so did the participants'
