Coffee, caffeine and weight loss: The whole story...
Caffeine possibly the most popular drug in the world
is also one of the most controversial. According to some, caffeine
increases your metabolic rate, making weight loss faster and easier.
It's also supposed to boost performance in the gym.
Others contend that caffeine makes you hungry by triggering a rise,
followed by a sharp fall, in blood sugar levels. In theory, a caffeine-induced
rise in calorie intake could wipe out any beneficial effect on your
metabolic rate.
Recent reports also suggest that caffeine raises both blood sugar
and insulin levels. This leads to temporary signs of a condition
called insulin resistance. As well as making weight loss more difficult,
some experts believe that insulin resistance increases your risk
of both heart disease and type II diabetes.
What's really going on? Is caffeine a useful tool in the fight
against fat, or simply the equivalent of "dancing with the
dietary devil?"
