A warning to all fish oil users...
The next time you visit your local bookstore, you'll probably find
several books devoted entirely to the benefits of fish and fish
oil supplements.
Fish oil is linked with everything from a reduction in the risk
of heart disease to improved mental function.
Fish is a special food because it contains two long-chain omega-3
fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and
docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Fish don't actually produce EPA
and DHA. Rather, they're synthesized by single-celled marine organisms
that fish eat [9].
Some of the fat you eat becomes part of your cell membranes, and
plays an important role in the way those cells behave [2]. Your
body is essentially a collection of billions of tiny cells. And
the health of your cells will reflect the health of your body.
Fish oil
Dr. Barry Sears, author of the popular diet book Enter the Zone,
describes the many benefits of fish oil in his latest book The
Omega RX Zone. According to Dr. Sears, "high-dose pharmaceutical-grade
fish oil is as close to a medical miracle as we will see in the
21st century."
However, fish oil does have a darker side. Many types of fish are
contaminated with mercury, while some fish oil supplements contain
organic pollutants. In fact, California Attorney General Bill Lockyer
filed
a suit in June 2004 against the makers of StarKist, Bumble Bee and
Chicken of the Sea tuna.
Lockyer's office tested albacore and light canned tunas for sale
in California. They found that both varieties have higher levels
of mercury than is generally deemed safe.
This has left many people confused about which fish (and fish oil
supplements) to eat, and which ones to avoid.
Are some kinds of fish more contaminated than others? Is the so-called
"pharmaceutical-grade" fish oil worth the extra money?
And is flaxseed oil a suitable alternative to fish?
