Should you worry about eating meat?
If you're trying to lose weight by following the wildly popular
Atkins diet, then you may be increasing your risk of developing
diabetes... or so the headlines tell us.
The reports are based on research published in the journal Diabetes
Care linking red meat with type II diabetes [10].
Researchers followed just more than 37,000 women aged 45 or older
for an average of eight years. All the women completed detailed
questionnaires about their food choices at study entry.
Red meat intake was considered the sum of hamburger, beef, pork
or lamb as a main dish, beef, pork, or lamb as a sandwich or mixed
dish, and all processed meat. Total processed meat was the sum of
hot dogs, bacon, sausage, salami, and bologna.
At follow-up, 1,558 of the women had developed type II diabetes.
After analyzing the results of the diet questionnaires, the researchers
found a link between the amounts of processed and red meat eaten
and the development of type II diabetes.
This doesn't, however, mean that meat is bad for you.
