The forgotten mineral deficiency that brings weight loss to a grinding halt...

Diet supplements that promise to speed up weight loss have enjoyed a massive rise in popularity over the last few years. However, virtually everyone ignores the vital role that minerals play in helping you to win the fight against fat.

The fact is, minerals are pretty boring. You won't ever see six-page magazine advertisements hailing minerals as the latest "breakthrough" weight loss supplement. However, a mineral deficiency is one of the hidden triggers that can bring weight loss to a grinding halt — even if you're eating right and exercising regularly.

Mineral deficiency

Although you only need a small amount of each one to prevent a mineral deficiency, all are necessary for your body to function properly. Iodine, for example, is a trace mineral taken up by your thyroid gland to become part of the hormone thyroxine, which regulates your metabolic rate.

Of course, this doesn't mean that taking extra iodine will help with weight loss. Despite the popularity of iodine supplements (such as kelp), there's no evidence to suggest that an iodine deficiency is a common problem.

A mineral deficiency can take weeks or months to manifest itself. And without some kind of blood test, you probably wouldn't even know it. Even then, your intake of one or more minerals could be sub-optimal, but not low enough to cause clear symptoms of a deficiency.

Weight loss

The problem with many weight loss diets is that they restrict the intake of certain food groups. While this may aid weight loss in the short-term, it can lead to a mineral deficiency over the long-term.
