Simple ways to fight back against endocrine disrupters and come out
on top...
You probably haven't heard of organochlorines, environmental estrogens
or endocrine disrupters despite the fact small amounts of these
chemicals are present in virtually all of us.
You eat them, drink them and breathe them. You probably use them at home
and at work. Yet, despite the fact they're virtually everywhere, scientists
aren't really sure how many of them we're exposed to and how that exposure
affects us.
Endocrine disrupters
The world we live in today is extremely different from that of our ancestors.
There are now thousands of synthetic chemicals in the environment. Some
are put directly into food. Others are added indirectly, in the form of
pesticides or industrial contaminants that have worked their way up the
food chain.
Endocrine disrupters are linked with some types of cancer, as well as
problems with behavior, learning and memory. Research from the Netherlands,
for example, shows that exposure to background levels of polychlorinated
biphenyls and dioxins can alter gender related play patterns in children
[10].
But what are these chemicals? Where do they come from? And more importantly,
what can you do to avoid them?
