How many of these common myths about the squat do you believe?
"Knee wreckers and back breakers."
I'd just finished my last set of squats when I heard this voice behind
me.
"Sorry?" I replied.
"Squats," came the answer from the man, who was now standing
just a few feet away from me, "they're knee wreckers and back breakers."
"If you really want to isolate your legs, you're far better off
using that," he said, pointing towards the knee extension machine.
"Even the leg press is better than the squat because it takes the
stress off your back."
Of course, I didn't bother to argue.
"Thanks for the advice," I smiled. "I'll keep it in mind
for next time."
Over the years, the squat has come in for a great deal of criticism.
In many modern health clubs, the popularity of exercise machines has left
the squat rack relegated to a dark, dusty corner in the back of the gym.
According to popular belief, the squat leads to pain or injury in your
knees and lower back. Unfortunately, much of the opinion regarding the
squat, leg press, and knee extension is backed by very little scientific
evidence.
