Are weight lifting belts bad for your back?
Weight lifting belts are supposed to protect your back while you exercise.
However, some believe that weight lifting belts actually increase your
risk of injury and make back pain worse, rather than better.
With the current popularity of so-called "core stability" training,
many people are discarding their weight lifting belts and turning to methods
such as drawing in or "hollowing" the abdominal wall in an attempt
to protect their back without using a belt.
In a recent survey, 3 out of 10 health center members admitted to using
a belt, mainly because they believe it prevents injury or improves performance
[21]. More interesting still, 3 out of 10 belt users report wearing a
belt for all exercises, including those done on machines.
Do weight lifting belts really protect your back? Are they an essential
piece of workout gear, or nothing more than an expensive fashion accessory?
And is drawing in or hollowing the abdominal wall really a suitable alternative?
